Purchase handmade cotton quilts or special gifts in silk or bamboo paper and support rural Vietnamese women. The regular income allows them to stay in their village with their children and dependants.
What to experience?
Vietnam Quilts specialises in high quality, handcrafted bed covers, accessories and giftware. There are a variety of quilts to choose from, which include different colours and themes, ranging from contemporary to Asian-inspired designs. Vietnam Quilts also accepts custom orders, ensuring unique products to suit any home. International shipping is available by both sea and air. Every quilt is hand stitched by women from poor rural regions.
Mekong Creations specialise in unique locally produced household and gift items, including paper mâché, silk, bamboo and water hyacinth products. They also produce items for luxury French brand Terre d’Oc and have permission to sell these designs locally. Many of the products are made with local materials, such as water hyacinth, which is an invasive plant in the Mekong Delta. Using the plant as raw material for handicraft motivates its harvesting, thus clearing waterways.
Their producers are trained in production techniques for their field, and supported in design and marketing by Mekong Plus NGO. All products are made in the villages. When you look at the price tag keep in mind that the products you purchase took many long hours to stitch, are someone else’s livelihood, and that they help women to get their children through school.
How does it help?
Vietnam Quilts and Mekong Creations are subsidiaries of French parent NGO Mekong Plus. These income-generating projects provide the women in remote villages with a sustainable livelihood. As a result, they are able to provide for their families, stay near their children and contribute to their local communities. The focus is to provide rewarding employment, increase family income, and improve children welfare.
Your purchase contributes to providing sustainable employment and salaries to women, but also supports the poor communities in which they live, as all profits are returned to the villages through community development programmes run by the parent NGO e.g. health education, micro loans and scholarships for poor families etc.
Currently, Vietnam Quilts employs around 340 women in communities northeast of Ho Chi Minh City (Duc Linh, Tanh Linh and Ham Thuan Nam in Binh Thuan Provinces) and Long My in the Mekong Delta. They have a similar project in Cambodia.
Mekong Creations was established in 2010. All products are made in the villages, allowing more time to be spent with families. Product categories are introduced to the public at Mekong Creations outlets, which serve as a training ground for new products and designs.
