What to experience?

Healing the Wounded Heart design and sell products made using traditional Vietnamese designs, from traditional Vietnamese silk and textiles made by the ethnic minority tribes of Northern Viet Nam or recycled materials. While they respect and preserve Vietnamese tradition, some designs are also inspired by many different cultures of the world.

As it is also a workshop, visiting Healing the Wounded Heart is a very special experience, because visitors get the chance to interact with the disabled artists. Most of the artisans are deaf, but are very proud of their work and willing to interact with tourists. The group of artisans is relatively small and the workshop has the feel of a family environment.  The artisans encourage visitors to learn how to make simple crafts so that they have something to take home with them to remind them of their experience.

How does it help?

It was originally set up as a project of the non-profit SPIRAL Foundation in cooperation with the Office of Genetic Counselling and Disabled Children, Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy. Both organisations have provided work for disabled and disadvantaged artisans in Viet Nam since 2003.

The products made by the artists in Hue are also sold at SPIRAL Foundation fundraisers and retail outlets in the United States and in select hotels in Hue. The Healing the Wounded Heart craft shop was opened in 2009 with the aim of making the project sustainable within Viet Nam.

Healing the Wounded Heart (HWH) currently works with 17 disabled artisans; all artisans receive fair wages, medical insurance, housing, a daily sponsored meal, and a recreational allowance.

Since HWH was started, the artists have shown tremendous personal growth. While before they saw themselves as disabled and as a burden on society, now they see that they can in fact be positive contributors to society and give back to their community.

All net proceeds are split between a sustainability fund for the disabled artists, and a heart surgery fund.  In the first two years of business, they have funded 18 heart surgeries.

Healing the Wounded Heart has established a local recycling system in Hue, and creates crafts using materials including aluminium soda cans, plastic water bottles and plastic snack wrappers.
