Discover quiet corners of the Mekong delta in comfortable sampans that sail in the opposite direction of mass tourism.

What to experience?

Cai Be Princess Sampan

Mekong Horizon is a cruise operator founded in 2003.  They have a fleet of twelve boats and also own and operate a restaurant.  The restaurant is a beautiful two-storey villa with typical Indochinese architecture, located on the banks of the Phu An river in a lush tropical garden surrounded by fruit orchards, exotic flowers and trees.  No doubt worth a stop when you cruise on one of their boats.

All boats in their fleet are designed and styled like authentic old sampan boats using local materials such as rattan and bamboo.  The boats have been designed to discover the Mekong Delta but also to make you feel as comfortable as possible, and to give you that extra bit of luxury.  On board you will feel transported back to a different era, and you can enjoy the river landscape on comfortable launch chairs.  The crew will pamper you with excellent drinks and delicious food.  Meals are both served on board and at some traditional houses on the riverbanks along the way, allowing a unique cultural exchange between locals and guests.

Of course the cruises are also overnight, and you will not miss your hotel room on the mainland.  All the overnight cruise boats are outfitted with spacious rooms and full amenities. The boats are also equipped with smaller rowing boats and bicycles if you feel like exploring in a quiet carbon free mode.

How does it help?

Le Longanier – Patio in Vietnamese Style

Mekong Horizon employs 80 staff and is located in a very remote area of the Mekong –  Phu An hamlet near Cai Be.  All staff including boat crews and restaurant employees come from the neighbourhood, mostly from poor and isolated areas, with no prior knowledge about the hospitality and services industry.  Mekong Horizon provides training programmes to all of them so that they acquire the skills required for the tourism business, with courses on foreign languages, having a service-minded and service attitude, and foreigners’ expectations regarding the level of service.

The smaller boats were all built locally with local materials such as bamboo, rattan and wood.  All rubbish is carefully collected by our crews on board or at the place where lunch/dinners are catered for during the cruise, so nothing is rejected into the environment or in the water.  They also make an effort in educating the community about environmental issues along the river, and show fishermen and communities  how to improve by leading by example.
