Relax and enjoy a comfortable staybythe Tien River in the Mekong Delta
What to experience?
Cai Be presents a typical image of the Mekong Delta: floating market, tropical fruit orchards, rice paddies as far as the eye can see, handicraft villages… and Mekong Lodge is hidden among the many gardens of mango, longan, rambutan, and durian trees. The only way to reach Mekong Lodge is by boat as it is situated on an island in the Tien River, but this is not a problem as boat is the most popular means of transport for local people.
The Mekong Lodge opened its doors in November 2010. It was built on the banks of the Tien River in the Mekong Delta about 120 km or 3 hours by car from Ho Chi Minh City (the lodge can arrange your transport from there). You can also travel by yourself to Cai Be harbour, and from there they will pick you up for free.
The lodge consists of 28 bungalows, built in a traditional style, with wooden wall panels, grass roofs, and pretty garden or river views. The interiors of the rooms are beautifully fitted out with bamboo furniture and local fabrics. No doubt the highlight in your room will be the carved wooden bathtub. The bungalows and other parts of the lodge have all the services that you would expect from a place that cares for their guests’ total comfort.
A variety of overnight packages are on offer that include activities in surrounding local villages. Of course you can simply book your overnight accommodation in one of the bungalows and then pick and choose what you would like to experience once there. The area is great for biking and walking trips; you can also visit the floating market and check out local handicraft and coconut candy workshops. If you want to remain near the lodge, you can also follow a cooking class with the chef, learn how to carve fruit and vegetables, or just enjoy fishing in the river.
How does it help?
The Mekong Lodge was built respecting the surrounding natural settings. They aim to not only care for you as a customer, but also to support the local people’s life and environment. All front office and most of the back office staff are local and come from the surrounding villages. The lodge supports hospitality training for all their staff and assures that all employees receive extra benefits. A higher than average salary is paid for all staff and everybody receives health insurance and support. Working hours for the staff are regulated, and if overtime is needed they are paid extra.
The food for all meals is sourced locally as much as possible. Activities such as walking and cycling through the local villages include visiting traditional confectionary villages and fruit gardens of the local people. The lodge actively supports the cultural exchange between visitors and locals, and offers activities where you are able to join local people and go fruit picking or fishing with them.
