How does it help ?
Since 1989, Intrepid have been responsible travel trail-blazers. The Intrepid Foundation currently supports around 50 NGO’s with projects in health care, education, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and environmental and wildlife protection. At the time of writing, 16 of these organisations are in the Mekong Region. Intrepid matches travellers’ donations dollar for dollar. Since 2002, The Intrepid Foundation has distributed over AU$2.2m to over 50 organisations.
In the GMS, recent support includes $10,000 for the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity; $47,400 towards rehabilitating bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade at Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre in Laos and 5 years of support for community based tourism in Leeled, Thailand, helping the community to replenish an amazing 1,000 hectares of mangroves.
Intrepid achieved Carbon Neutral status in 2010, offsetting all trips operated directly. Their carbon management program assesses emissions generated by offices, trips and flights. All travellers in the GMS receive cloth bags with ‘Say No to Plastic Bags’ written in English and local languages.
A typical 15 day Intrepid trip in the Mekong region uses somewhere between 40 and 60 local service providers. 90% of Intrepid employees in the Mekong region are local people, and many have advanced to management roles. Intrepid also provide employment for local community members through activities such as traditional massage, guiding, and cooking.
Leaders are trained to understand environmental issues and motivate Intrepid guests to travel responsibly. This includes teaching some local language, to maximise interaction and learning.
