Greendiscovery Laos is THE adventure tour operator and specialist in outdoor activities with unique opportunities to meet local people during homestays, trekking, zipping, climbing and kayaking all over Laos thanks to a network of provincial offices.
What to experience?
As an ecotourism specialist and outdoor adventure tour operator, Greendiscovery (GDL), with its wide coverage across the country, is your ideal partner to experience the heart of Laos, and succumb to the draw of nature while staying in villagers’ homes. You will cycle, trek or kayak through amazing landscapes in northern, central or southern Laos, each area having many unique spots to stun you with. GDL facilitates the participation in traditional ceremonies (e.g. Baci), dancing, singing, and story-telling events. You’ll find all the different trips they have designed on their website, most requiring to be in a good physical condition. And for the fittest we recommend one of the most spectacular trips, the experience of a life time, the Tree Top.
Your presence in less-travelled villages helps to raise Lao people’s awareness to the added value of preserving both their natural environmental assets and cultural richness while bringing them some income. In turn, the tourists learn the characteristics of different people and tribes, and to act in a sensitive way to respect their unique cultures and way of thinking.
How does it help?
The founder of Green Discovery is a Lao, nature conservation and the preservation of Lao cultural heritage are the foundations of his company philosophy, which he was able to pass on to his staff. It is known as a fully committed responsible tour operator applying a responsible approach for each tour they set up, as giving back to their community is only natural for them.
Each programme is closely built in partnership with villagers to provide a better spread of benefits. Guides come from the villages you visit, while food and accommodation is provided by several families following a rotation system that allows a fair distribution of revenues. Through increased awareness and understanding of the benefits of tourism for the villagers, wildlife is better protected, slash & burn reduced, barriers to strangers lowered, and cultural customs preserved. Part of the money goes to village development funds spent on social projects.
Green Discovery works closely with the government authorities, the private sector and NGOs. Whenever they start a project, they initiate a thorough consultation process with all stakeholders. They follow the principles of responsible travel as defined in the official “Eco-tourism Development and Strategy Plan 2004-2010”, which they helped to draft.
The company set up the “Green Care Fund” to enable lower secondary school children from urban centres to join 2-day tours in nearby natural areas. Besides being lots of fun, these trips are designed to raise the awareness and knowledge on the protection of the forest environment, its ecosystems and biodiversity, so that children can maintain it in a sustainable way in the future.
