Guangxi’s challenging topography and distance from major centres of commerce has had both positive and negative effects on its economy.  For the most part, the province has been poverty-stricken with little industrial and economic development, and with only limited farming opportunities, but the dramatic landscapes have also supported a successful tourism industry. It has not been until the last few decades that big business has developed, with Luizhou becoming an industrial centre, and a General Motors manufacturing centre, among other automobile businesses, setting up shop.

For farming, the most prominent crops are sugar cane, peanuts and tobacco, with rice, corn and sweet potatoes also grown in the province.
