The official language of Cambodia is Khmer, derived from the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit; written Khmer can be traced back to the 6th century when the first inscriptions appeared on temples. English is the most popular international language and is widely spoken in urban centres. French was the language of choice in the 1950s and 1960s and many older Cambodians still speak it. Chinese and Vietnamese are quite widely understood.
